Robinson Cano is a Dominican-American professional baseball second baseman for the Seattle Mariners. A six-time All Star and five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Cano is best known for his handy glove work and hitting prowess—he has a career batting average of .307. Cano is one of four players to have won both a World Series and a World Baseball Classic.
Born in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic, Cano attended San Pedro Apostol High School, excelling in both baseball and basketball. Following high school graduation, Cano was signed by the New York Yankees in 2001 as an amateur free agent. Cano earned high praise as he worked his way through the minor league ranks, being named one of the game’s top prospects in addition to participating in the 2003 MLB All-Star Futures Game. Cano made his major league debut in 2005, finishing second in American League Rookie of the Year balloting. Since his rookie season, Cano has become one of the premier players in the game, being named a six-time All Star, five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, two-time Gold Glove award winner, and earning American League Player of the Month twice. Cano was a member of the New York Yankees’ 2009 World Series championship team, and a member of the Dominican Republic’s 2013 World Baseball Classic championship team, where he was subsequently named tournament MVP.
In April 2013, Cano became the first athlete to sign with Roc Nation Sports in April of 2013. In December of that year, he signed a 10-year contract with the Seattle Mariners and made his debut with the team the following spring. His offensive contribution was immediately felt in the Pacific Northwest, as Cano tallied .314 batting average with 14 home runs and 82 RBI during his inaugural season. On September 23, 2015, Cano became the first second baseman and 14th player in MLB history to reach 2,000 career hits in 11 seasons. In addition, Cano is the only player in MLB history to record at least 30 doubles in each of his first 11 seasons. Most recently, on April 26, 2016 Cano reached the 1,000 RBI milestone against the Houston Astros, making him the fifth-fastest second baseman to achieve this feat in his 1,708th game. In his next at bat, Cano improved to 1,004 RBIs after belting his 10th career grand slam.
Robinson Cano is also known for his philanthropic endeavors as the founder of the RC22 Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to positively impact the lives of underserved children and communities both locally and globally. Since its inception as a 501c3 charitable organization in October 2011, the RC22 Foundation has established and engaged in various initiatives that expand opportunities for improved outcomes in the areas of youth development and community healthcare. In November 2015, the RC22 Foundation and Cano unveiled the first of 22 planned RC22 DREAM Schools in his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. This signature project of the RC22 Foundation provides 100 impoverished youth with a free Montessori-based education in partnership with the Dominican Republic Education and Mentoring (DREAM) Project. Since Cano’s signing with the Mariners, the RC22 Foundation has expanded its philanthropic footprint in Seattle with a variety of local programs that amplify its focus and impact in the areas of education, health, fitness and wellness through partnerships with the Seattle Children’s Hospital and Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic, City Year Seattle, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of King County.
