Philip Lawrence Releases Letters I Never Sent Album
Roc Nation songwriter, Philip Lawrence, just dropped his album Letters I Never Sent, via Atlantic Records.
“LETTERS I NEVER SENT” marks an extraordinary solo debut for Lawrence — best known as one-third of The Smeezingtons, the award-winning songwriting/production team also comprising Ari Levine and the one and only Bruno Mars. Songs such as “Just Breathe” reveal Lawrence’s own remarkable gifts as singer and performer, immediately establishing him as a striking new artist (see below tracklisting). All tracks were written by Lawrence, in collaboration with GRAMMY(R)-nominated nominated guitarist/producer Jean-Yves “Jeeve” Ducornet (Santana, 2Pac) and songwriter Michael Diskint.
“This album is an honest expression of the happenings in my life,” says Lawrence. “It was such a personal, cathartic experience for me: an opportunity to really dig deep about the issues I’ve been going through in my life.”
Lawrence, who has always been a fan of folk and rock music, found himself inspired by artists like Billy Joel, Seal and Lenny Kravitz while creating his own sound in “LETTERS I NEVER SENT.”
Lawrence and The Smeezingtons have proven among pop’s all-time most prolific and popular songwriting/production units, earning countless awards and “Producer of the Year, Non-Classical” nominations for two consecutive GRAMMY(R) Awards. The team burst onto the airwaves in 2008, creating hits for such artists as Natasha Bedingfield, K’naan, and Matisyahu, but truly came into its own two years later with a series of unstoppable #1 singles including B.o.B’s “Nothin’ On You (Feat. Bruno Mars),” Travie McCoy’s top 3 smash, “Billionaire (Feat. Bruno Mars),” and CeeLo Green’s worldwide sensation, “F**k You.”
As if that weren’t enough, The Smeezingtons were also behind the board for Mars’ own 2010 solo debut, “DOO-WOPS & HOOLIGANS.” Fueled by such #1 milestones as “Just The Way You Are” and “Grenade,” the album quickly became an international phenomenon, earning total global sales now in excess of 6 million.
An array of additional songwriting and production credits followed, including tracks from such diverse performers as Alicia Keys, and Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa, whose “Young, Wild & Free (Feat. Bruno Mars)” received a 2013 GRAMMY(R) nod for “Best Rap Song.”
Lawrence — who plays a prominent role in his good friend Bruno’s world-famous backing band, The Hooligans — once again joined forces with his fellow Smeezingtons to helm Mars’ blockbuster second album, “UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX.” Front-loaded with worldwide #1 hits like “Locked Out Of Heaven” and “When I Was Your Man,” the collection debuted atop the Billboard 200 upon its release late last year and has since been certified platinum by the RIAA for sales exceeding 1 million.
