Drafted in the 32nd round (954th overall) by the Kansas City Royals out of high school, Shawaryn instead opted to attend the University of Maryland.

Shawaryn made an immediate impact as a freshman at Maryland, recording a then-school record 11 wins alongside a 3.12 ERA and earning 2014 freshman All-American honors. Shawaryn continued to dominate throughout his sophomore season, tallying a school record 13 wins and 138 strikeouts as he led Maryland to their second consecutive NCAA Super Regional appearance, earning himself First-Team Big Ten and First-Team All American honors. Following the 2015 season, Shawaryn secured a roster spot on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, becoming the first player from Maryland to do so since 1979. Shawaryn logged a 3.18 ERA during his junior campaign and recorded 97 strikeouts, good for fourth-most in the Big Ten. Forgoing his senior season following his selection in the 2016 MLB Draft, Shawaryn left Maryland holding five school records including 13 single season wins, 138 single season strikeouts, 30 career wins, 307 career strikeouts and 307.1 career innings pitched.
