Melvin Ingram is an American football linebacker for the San Diego Chargers of the National Football League. A former collegiate All-American, Ingram is a tenacious pass rusher and an integral member of the Chargers’ defense.

Born in Hamlet, North Carolina, Ingram attended Richmond County High School, where he excelled at both football and basketball. Tallying 87 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his senior year, Ingram earned a four-star recruit rating from, and later committed to play football at the University of South Carolina.

Ingram immediately made an impact during his freshman year at South Carolina, playing in all 12 games and compiling 15 tackles, including a season-high five tackles against Kentucky. After missing the subsequent 2008 season due to injury, Ingram returned in 2009, making his first collegiate start against Florida and collecting 18 tackles and 1.5 sacks throughout the season. Ingram continued to elevate his defensive dominance throughout his junior year, recording a team-high nine sacks. Named a team captain before the start of his senior year, Ingram’s 2011 season earned him national recognition as his 48 tackles, school-record-tying 10 sacks and three touchdowns led South Carolina to 11 wins and a Top Ten finish. Following the season, Ingram was named to the All-SEC team and earned consensus First Team All-American honors, becoming just the third consensus All-American in school history and the first since 1984.

Considered one of the most versatile and physically gifted prospects in his draft class, Ingram was selected by the San Diego Chargers with the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He signed with the team on May 11, 2012.

As a rookie, Ingram suited up for all sixteen games of the 2012 season, accumulating 27 tackles and a sack. After missing the first half of the 2013 season with an injury, Ingram returned to the field in early December, helping the Chargers earn their first playoff berth since 2009 and first playoff win since 2008. In that playoff win, Ingram was dominant—he earned his first career interception and tallied a team-high four quarterback pressures. Following a 2014 campaign that was cut short due to injury, Ingram developed into a premiere NFL talent in 2015, starting in all 16 games and collecting a team-high 10.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, four forces fumbles and 29 quarterback hits. Ingram also became the first Chargers’ player to record a double-digit sack season since 2011.

Outside of football, Ingram is an aspiring rapper, releasing a full-length mixtape titled “From Nothing to Something” in 2015. Ingram considers the track “Pops” to be his favorite on the mixtape, a song that pays tribute to his late father George Melvin Ingram Jr., who passed away in 1998. Ingram also established the nonprofit foundation “Mission Possible”, which looks to provide inner-city and low income children the educational opportunity and resources they need.

Ingram signed with Roc Nation Sports in September of 2016.
