MEEK MILL

Meek Mill

North Philadelphia’s Robert Rahmeek Williams, better known as Meek Mill, is no stranger to adversity and triumph. Meek Mill was close to family members including his beloved grandmother and uncle, Grandmaster Nell, a pioneer in Philadelphia’s hip-hop scene, for support and inspiration to channel his emotions into music.  At the age of 12 and following a street battle loss to neighboring rappers, Meek decided to take rap seriously, even forming a short-lived group called BloodHoundz.  Following the limited run with the group,  Meek decided to venture on his own, quickly becoming one of Philadelphia’s hottest underground rap artists. As industry veterans and gatekeepers continue to check for the up-and-comer, anticipation is at an all-time high for the 25-year old rapper and his August 28th debut, Dreams & Nightmares.

Rally For Meek Mill - November 13th in Philadelphia at 5pm. A broken criminal justice system has allowed one biased judge to incarcerate Meek Mill. Judge Brinkley has acted unethically since the day she met Meek, failing to separate personal feelings and her duty as a judge, and it has led to an unfair and extremely harsh sentence for Meek, against the clear recommendations from the DA and Meek’s probation officer. The only way to get justice for Meek is for Judge Brinkley to recognize that she is incapable of overseeing this case fairly and to IMMEDIATELY recuse herself. We are going to rally at the courthouse to SEND A MESSAGE to Judge Brinkley – and every judge in Philadelphia – that our community won’t accept this treatment any longer. WE MUST get #Justice4Meek Join us to #Rally4Meek and spread the word. Learn more about the event here or Justice4Meek.com

The American criminal justice system holds more than 2.3 million people in confinement. In addition, 4.7 million Americans are on parole or probation, and Philadelphia has the 2nd highest rate of adults on probation. African Americans are only 13% of the American population but constitute 40% of the incarcerated population. African Americans also represent 47% of the 1,900 exonerations listed in the October 2006 National Registry of Exonerations, and the great majority of more than 1,800 additional innocent defendants who were framed and convicted of crimes in 15 large-scale police scandals and later cleared in “group exonerations.” According to the U.S. Department of Justice in 2014, more than 50,000 people were in prison in Pennsylvania. Blacks accounted for 48.7 percent of them, and Hispanics made up 10.7 percent. The case of Robert Williams, aka Meek Mill, is emblematic to the systemic problems of our criminal justice system, specifically with regard to what many are calling the “probation trap” in Philadelphia. Meek was arrested at 19 years old by Narcotics Field Unit (NFU) police officers who are now currently under investigation as they are believed to have participated in crimes conducted by fellow officers who are indicted for assault, robbery, kidnapping and false arrests to extort more than $500,000 in cash, drugs, watches and clothing from individuals targeted as drug dealers. Due to the revelation of numerous cases confirming police misconduct, perjury, bias, and corruption among Narcotics Field Unit, 800 cases were dismissed in 2014. Yet, in spite of these findings, Meek Mill has been on probation his entire adult life; in fact, his probation has been extended until 2023 for a total of 15 years. Furthermore, Meek is currently in prison serving a 2 to 4 year sentence for technical probation violations – noncriminal and non-violent offenses. Why is Meek Mill still in prison? Meek Mill is one of the millions of nonviolent offenders caught in a long and alternating cycle of incarceration and surveillance. Because of his voice and visibility, we can amplify the reality of a broken system and bring to light the opportunities to fix it.

We are thrilled that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has directed Judge Brinkley to immediately issue an order releasing Meek on bail. As we have said all along, Meek was unjustly convicted and should not have spent a single day in jail. We are also pleased that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has noted that Judge Brinkley may opt to remove herself from presiding over any further proceedings in Meek’s case in the interests of justice. Meek is excited to be reunited with his family, and we, along with Meek, intend to continue to shine the light on a justice system in need of reform to prevent any other citizen from being put through what Meek has endured.

Series will reveal Meek’s quest for justice with unprecedented behind-the-scenes access and interviews

SANTA MONICA, CALIF., May 3, 2018 – Meek Mill and Amazon Prime Video today announced a six-part documentary series that will follow Meek and his fight for exoneration while exposing flaws in the criminal justice system. In collaboration with Meek and executive producers Shawn Carter, Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman, Paul and Isaac Solotaroff, and produced by Roc Nation and The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC), the series will give viewers unprecedented access to the star’s life, career, and criminal justice odyssey, while demonstrating the negative effects long tail probation is having on urban communities of color. The series is expected to premiere in 2019 exclusively on Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories. Meek Mill commented: “I’m grateful for this unique opportunity to share my story and I look forward to collaborating with Amazon Prime Video, Roc Nation and The Intellectual Property Corporation on this incredible series. Not only will this documentary give viewers an unprecedented look at my life, but it will also allow me to use my public platform to highlight the need for criminal justice reform.” “We’re thrilled to be working with such a talented group of producers to bring Meek’s life story to light,” said Heather Schuster, Head of Unscripted, Amazon Originals. “Meek’s story of being incarcerated needs to be told and we will have incredible access that takes Prime members beyond the headlines and into his world.” “Every day of Meek’s adult life has been lived under the threat of incarceration, if not actually behind bars,” said Eli Holzman, CEO of IPC. “With our partners at Roc Nation and the incredible team at Amazon Studios, we are privileged to take on the responsibility of crafting the definitive documentary on Meek’s story, the corrupt system he continues to navigate to ensure his freedom, and the larger issue of long-tail probation in our country. Hopefully Meek and the millions like him won’t have to wait for justice much longer." In November 2017, Meek Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams, was sent to county lockup for two to four years after he was captured popping a wheelie in an Instagram video. It was the third time Judge Genece Brinkley sent Meek to prison for violating his probation. But this latest sentencing caused widespread outrage as being too severe and triggered a series of investigations, which will be explored in this documentary series. Many advocates see Meek’s sentence as evidence of the inequalities in a criminal justice system where African-Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites. This explosive investigative series will follow Meek and his supporters as they attempt to uncover the different facets of corruption that kept him under the thumb of Philadelphia’s criminal justice system for over a decade, while revealing his life post incarceration. Each hour-long episode unravels Meek’s past—from the childhood trauma that shaped him as an artist, to the vast conspiracy behind his latest imprisonment—while following present day developments in his legal battle, personal life, and music career. The series will also feature Meek’s original music. The series is produced by The Intellectual Property Corporation in partnership with Roc Nation, investigative journalist Paul Solotaroff, and documentary filmmaker Isaac Solotaroff. For IPC the executive producers are Holzman and Saidman.
