Peterson committed to attend Arizona State on a college baseball scholarship, but instead chose to sign with the Padres.

In February 2016, Roc Nation Sports announced that it has signed Peterson to its roster of athletes ahead of the 2016 MLB season. Peterson is the younger brother of Seattle Mariners prospect D.J. Peterson, who is also signed to Roc Nation Sports.
